Are Your Surgical Residents Viewing Procedures With One Eye Closed?

Most teaching hospitals have gone to HD cameras on their microscopes as well as HD monitors in the OR. The jump from standard definition (SD) to true high definition was gradual: 480p to 720p to 1080p. Now with the introduction of 4K monitors (2160p) that can even upgrade 1080p signals, the surgical images are truely breathtaking. The detail and color are crisp and bright. BUT, IT IS STILL ONLY 2D! Viewing is like operating with one eye closed.

Every teaching institution should offer their Residents, Fellows, Medical Students who observe procedures on monitors in the OR the same stereopsis view that the surgeon sees through the microscope. Not only viewing during surgical procedures, but also post surgical teaching as well as cadavaric training. Currently, the 3D choice is either 2K (1080p) or 4K (2160p). Shop.clamedical.com offers both.

3D medical grade cameras for surgical microscopes: Panasonic offers the GPUH532 2D 4K camera (which can become 3D with two camera control units are gen-locked).

3D medical grade video recorders: Sony offers both the HVO3300MT 2D/3D 2K medical grade video recorder and the HVO4000MT 2D/3D 4K medical grade video recorder  . Both systems record in 2D and 3D simultaneously. Med X Change also offers the Med X Change 4Klarity which records 3D in 2K and 2D in 4K.

3D medical grade video monitors: Sony offers the LMDX550MD 55" 4K 3D medical grade monitor.

Cart systems: Sony offers the MSC/01 roll cart that will hold the camera control unit, video recorder, monitor, touch screen controller.

So, as you can see, there are viable options to choose from. Isn't time to open the other eye?
